The Coast Watchers Memorial Lighthouse in Madang

Situated on the point of entrance of the Madang harbour is one of Papua New Guinea’s most famous war memorials.

The Madang Coastwatchers Memorial Lighthouse is a magnificent 90ft high lighthouse.
White in color it is shaped like a candle flame with four fins at the base (which make it look like a bomb).

At the top of the structure is the beacon housed in a bronze guard the shape of a flame.

Kwato Island: God, Church and Cricket..a PNG story

Kwato Island is a small island set in the China Straits near Samarai Island off the mainland. It lies along one of the oldest trade routes in the South Pacific.

Many traders have passed through here as they sought their fortunes in gold, bech-de-mer, mother of pearl and sandalwood.

Bita Paka War Cemetery – The Memory of Thousands.

This war cemetery near the town of Kokopo, East New Britian Province, contains the graves of over 1000 Allied servicemen who died in the First and Second World wars in East New Britian.
These include Australian Sevicemen who died in the 1914 – 1918 conflict.

The cemetery also contains the graves of hunderds of Indian soldiers taken prisoners in Malaysia and shipped to Rabaul to be used as foreced labour by the Japanese.

The Karavia Tunnels of Rabaul – PNG’s brief history of slave labour

The Karavia tunnels are a part of the network of underground fortifications constructed by the Japanese Imperial Forces during the occupation of Rabaul.

These tunnels total more than 100 kilometers were dug out of the pumice hills that surround the Simpson harbour.

They were used to house a hospital, barracks, storerooms, workshops and a submarine base for the submarines to slip straight into the Simpson harbour unseen.

The Role of Traditional Shell Money for the Tolai People

The Tolai’s are an ethnic group of people who make up two thirds of the East New Britain Province population.

The Tolais use shell money.

Also known as Tabu, it is the traditional money which is used for payment of bride price, distributed at death ceremony, payment of food from local markets, for settling disputes and for initiation of males into the secret male society of Tubuan and Dukduk.

The Origins of Wabag Town

The capital of Enga Province is Wabag Town.
During the colonial period Wabag was an old airstrip and Enga was a part of the Western Highlands. Just before Independence in 1975, Enga was made a province of its own. The Wabag airstrip was closed and the landing strip became Wabag Town, the adminstrative capital of Enga. Continue reading
