PORT Moresby has more than 100 nightclubs to cater for the low to the high income earners. For those that want to have a beer, hang out with friends, find a date for the night, fall in love or simply just want to gamble, Moresby’s clubs are open and lively, seven nights a week.
The hottest night club, and the one frequented by the upper echelons, is generally considered to be the Gold Club. This hot nightspot has come a long way since opening in 1997 and 12 years later it has never stopped expanding and changing..
“Our equipment is of world class standard – but a night club on its own cannot survive as just a pure night club,” says Gold Club
General Manager, Yannis Nicholau, originally from Greece. “The economy has been stable and steadily improving and if managed properly, there is only one way, and that is up.”
Other popular night clubs popular with those that have a bit of money behind them are Ozzies which is run by local Kiwi-born identity Graham Osbourne, Club Shooters, Balus Bar, Pondo Tavern, Paddy’s Bar, Club Junction and the Port Moresby Country Club.
Moresby also boats exclusive clubs like the Yacht Club which is family orienated, as is the nearby Aviat Club. Both are popular with Moresby’s expatriate community, politicians and captains of industry.
For the more adventurous there are other clubs like the Penthouse, Magilas, Shady Rest, Club 22, Sports Inn, U Club, Diamond Club, Armani Club. These are the preferred hangouts of the working class and can be quite lively. Most of these nightspots operate all week for those looking for a mid-week party.
Most of the major hotels have their own night spots and others are only a short drive away.
While all clubs cater for drinkers and gamblers alike, some have a unique flavor of their own, featuring interesting attractions with a distinctive Moresby touch.
Such events include Pacific dancing displays with Polynesian beauties swinging their hips to a traditional beat and daring displays of body painting which leave little to the imagination.
Some clubs have karaoke competitions, talent quests, quiz shows and snooker contests. All clubs have deejays playing the latest sounds and there is also a healthy live band scene, usually featuring bands with a unique PNG sound.
Moresby’s clubs are all staffed by friendly waitresses and some employ hostesses to keep the patrons company whilst they enjoy a drink or two.
All clubs have very good security and customer safety is their main concern. That being so, Moresby clubs are often safer places to party than many overseas venues. Going out at night in Moresby reinforces just how friendly the local people are.
And whether you want to enjoy a few quiet drinks or rage till dawn, Port Moresby nightlife offers a multitude of choices for all.
